As well as being a year that swept in many changes with AAA behemoths, VR, and updated console releases, 2016 was a distinctive year for the indie developer. Gamers where awed by personal projects that captured hearts and minds in unique, challenging ways with titles like The Witness, Stardew Valley, Inside, Abzu, Owlboy, this list can go on and on. One of the most surprisingly standout games of last year was Superhot thanks to its unique exploration of first-person shooting mechanics and its bold, often abrupt presentation. Indie games have their own sort of hype and expectations in comparison to AAA titles, often they go unnoticed until they are released and become widespread due to word of mouth or promotion from Steam, Sony or Microsoft. Its reliance on the game’s own merits often make successful indie releases deserving of their own praise which Superhot had certainly achieved in doing so making it one of the most influential and important games to play from 2016. Astroneer was released on Steam’s early access store a few weeks ago and has a small, yet dedicated following admiring it’s entertaining, exploratory features and easily accessible multiplayer capabilities. Dungeon Souls showed some fun promise when it was initially released in its Early Access Days on Steam. Clearly it’s inspired by similar games with developers, Lamina Studios, acknowledging clear influences, yet the game attempts to add its own features to the roguelike genre in order to entice players. Owlboy has an inviting array of many possibilities for the player. It can entreat them to a nostalgic exploration of bygone days of youth in a story about overcoming the odds and fighting the big bad in a fantastical story with outstanding, sparkling visuals to enrich the imagination. On an intrinsic, granular level, it connects deeply with a story deeply rooted in forging bonds with one another can have remarkable or deeply threatening affects on the world at large in a sprawling that touches the heart in many ways. There’s fun, engaging gameplay that’s one part unlocking the next path in complex areas of the world using an interesting buddy system combining different friends of our protagonist which then can also can be used in combat to defeat enemies or avoid perilous obstacles. Obsessive developers might talk about working on one small, specific detail of their games to make it “feel right” and I feel like this game, which its developers, D-Pad Studio, spent a lengthy time on showcases this high degree of polish in the game. All the core elements of its game work so well to make this game an intensely memorable experience that will inspire any gamer who comes across it. Continue reading “Owlboy Review”
